Fat Transfer Candidates
You may be a candidate for facial fat transfer (also known as facial fat grafting) if you are in good general health, do not smoke and have adequate surplus fat to use. Most people, even slender people, have enough fat for the procedure; however, if you do not, Dr. Roham can recommend an alternative approach.
As a prospective candidate, you should be informed about the potential risks of the procedure and understand what to expect. Dr. Roham will thoroughly explain the projected results and answer any questions you have about the procedure.
You may choose to combine fat transfer to the face with another facial procedure, such as facelift or blepharoplasty, depending on your specific aesthetic goals.
Fat Transfer Treatment Details
Fat transfer is a three-part process. The total treatment time varies slightly by patient, but it is usually a few hours. Anesthesia is used, and the type will be pre-determined by you and Dr. Roham in consultation with his board-certified anesthesiologist associate.
To begin, Dr. Roham must remove the surplus fat from another area of your body, such as the buttocks, thighs or abdomen. He makes several small skin openings and uses a cannula instrument to break up and remove the fat.
Next, Dr. Roham purifies the fat and prepares it for the injections. He may process the fat through a centrifuge before placing it into syringes for injection.
Then, Dr. Roham precisely injects the fat into the pre-determined areas of the face that need volume and definition. Most, but not all, of the transplanted fat will develop a blood supply. With a blood supply, the fat can survive permanently in its new location.
Fat Grafting Recovery
Both the donor area and the facial area(s) treated will be swollen, bruised and sore following the procedure. Anticipate taking a few weeks to recover from facial fat transfer and limit your physical activities during that time.
